Brook's blistering century sees England crush Sri Lanka in T20
Harry Brook smashed an unbeaten 114 as England thrashed Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20 in Southampton, with his innings drawing comparisons to former star Kevin Pietersen.
England produced a dominant display in the first Vitality T20 against Sri Lanka in Southampton, posting 254-4 before bowling their opponents out for 135 to win by 119 runs.
The standout performance came from Harry Brook, who blasted an unbeaten 114 off 49 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes. His aggressive, high-tempo batting drew widespread comparisons to former England batter Kevin Pietersen, who recently joined the team's coaching staff as a mentor ahead of next year's World Cup.
England captain Ben Stokes, watching from home, praised Brook on social media, suggesting his talent might even surpass that of Pietersen. Brook himself said he had admired Pietersen's attacking style growing up and saw similarities in how both players approach bowlers with intent.
Brook shared a 128-run partnership with Jos Buttler, who scored 80, laying the foundation for England's imposing total. In reply, Sri Lanka's top performer was Wellalage with 33, but young seamer Sonny Baker starred with figures of 3-12, helping bowl Sri Lanka out inside 19 overs.
Statistical comparisons show Brook and Pietersen had similar records at the same age of 27, though each holds advantages in different formats. Since being promoted to number three in England's T20 side earlier this year, Brook has averaged 95.20.
Brook also currently captains England's T20 side, having won 18 of his last 20 matches in charge. He described the team's overall performance on the night as close to perfect.
