BTA: Windshield damage claims cost insurer €3.4 million over three years
Insurer BTA reports that windshield damage accounts for roughly a quarter of all vehicle damage claims under its comprehensive coverage, with most cases requiring full glass replacement rather than repair.

Insurance company BTA Baltic Insurance Company has disclosed that over the past three years it has paid out €3.4 million in comprehensive (KASKO) insurance claims related to damaged car windshields. Such cases make up approximately 25% of all reported vehicle damage claims each year, making windshield damage one of the most common insurance incidents among drivers.
Most cases require full replacement
According to BTA's data, in 91% of cases where windshield damage is identified, the glass cannot simply be repaired — it must be replaced entirely. This means that even a small crack or scratch is often not a minor issue, as it can lead to the need for a full windshield replacement, a more costly solution than localized repair.
Highest payouts for bus windshields
The largest insurance payouts by BTA have been for shattered bus windshields, with some cases reaching as much as €7,300. This amount significantly exceeds the typical cost of replacing a passenger car's windshield, reflecting the larger size of bus glass and the more complex installation process involved.
The information provided by BTA underscores the importance for drivers of responding promptly to any windshield damage, since even a seemingly minor crack can quickly worsen and result in the need for a more expensive glass replacement.
