Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, has predicted that the active phase of the war could conclude within 2026. According to him, this will require further escalation, which is necessary to eventually reach de-escalation.
Budanov noted that spring talks progressed at a very good pace, but currently everyone is in an escalation phase. He explained that the path to peace typically involves maximum escalation, followed by de-escalation and resumption of dialogue, if both parties are interested.
One factor contributing to this window of opportunity is the upcoming US midterm elections in November, though Budanov stressed that this is not the main driver. He also emphasized that ending the war will be addressed both on the battlefield and in negotiations. Only coordinated action by Ukraine, the US, and Europe can compel Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to stop the war.
At the same time, Budanov categorically rejected any territorial compromises, stating that they are not possible.
