To combat Buffalo's notoriously harsh winters, the stadium features a natural grass field with underground heating coils to prevent freezing, along with what is described as the world's largest automated stadium snow-melt system, which uses roof sensors to monitor and melt snow accumulation. A 360-degree canopy covering 60% of the seating bowl also reduces the impact of wind.
First home game against the Lions
The Detroit Lions were the opponent for the stadium's debut, played on Thursday Night Football and featuring the band OneRepublic, which delivered what Buffalo Rumblings described as the franchise's first major Highmark Stadium halftime show. Per highlights published by the Buffalo Bills, quarterback Josh Allen threw multiple first-half touchdown passes, including to tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox, plus a 43-yard touchdown to Josh Palmer. After his third touchdown pass of the half, Buffalo led 27-7. Allen also scored the first-ever touchdown at Highmark Stadium on a 1-yard run. Linebacker Greg Rousseau sacked Lions quarterback Jared Goff twice in the first quarter alone.
