Drought exposes Danube riverbed, sparking mammoth fossil search in Bulgaria
Volunteers in northern Bulgaria are combing the dried-up banks of the Danube for new fossils after mammoth bones surfaced there in July. The search comes as a severe European drought pushes river levels to record lows.
A prolonged drought across Europe has driven river levels to historic lows, inadvertently opening the door to new paleontological finds. In northern Bulgaria, the receding Danube has exposed stretches of riverbank that are now drawing the attention of amateur fossil hunters.
About 20 volunteers have joined a search effort near the spot where mammoth bones were discovered in July as the river's waters withdrew. The initiative was organized by the Regional Museum of History in Ruse, which hopes the exposed terrain may yield further fossils or artifacts.
The Danube, one of Europe's longest rivers, flows through multiple countries and has been significantly affected by the drought gripping much of the continent this summer. Falling water levels have disrupted shipping and agriculture in the region, while also uncovering areas of riverbed that are normally submerged and inaccessible.
The discovery of mammoth remains in July suggested that the area could hold further evidence of prehistoric animal life. The museum-led search represents an effort to make scientific use of the unusual conditions, even as the drought itself continues to pose serious challenges for the wider region.
