Bulgaria's Naval Forces spotted an unidentified drone in the waters of the Black Sea near St. Ivan Island on Thursday, August 27, and neutralized it, the country's Ministry of Defence reported, as cited by "Yevropeiska Pravda".

How the operation unfolded

According to the ministry, a specialized navy team carried out a reconnaissance and destruction mission targeting an unmanned aerial vehicle that had been spotted at the northern pier opposite St. Ivan Island.

The servicemen acted after receiving a request from the governor of Burgas region, following a decision by the chief of defence and on the order of the navy commander. For safety reasons, the drone was destroyed on site with strict adherence to safety protocols.

Previous incidents

This is not the first such incident along the Bulgarian coast in recent days. A day earlier, on August 26, Bulgaria's Naval Forces had discovered and identified fragments of several drones found along the country's Black Sea coastline.

Earlier, on August 14, suspicious objects were found in three separate locations along Bulgaria's Black Sea coast — an airplane-type drone, believed to be a reconnaissance model, along with possible fragments of other unmanned aerial vehicles.

The recurring nature of these incidents points to an increased presence of drones in the region, though the ministry has not provided further details on the origin or ownership of the devices.
