Bungie details Marathon's December Symbiosis update and March 2027 plans
Bungie has outlined what's coming in Marathon's December Symbiosis update and a larger March patch that will kick off a new phase of development in 2027.
Game studio Bungie, which previously announced a Nightfall refresh for October, has now shared further details on its roadmap for the shooter Marathon.
December's Symbiosis update
The upcoming Symbiosis update in December will introduce a team deathmatch mode alongside a permanently available PvE mode, with details for the latter still being finalized. The PvE mode is intended to let players experiment with their loadouts and refine their skills without facing attacks from other players.
Bungie also plans to rework the Perimeter zone, the first area players encounter, giving it a more distinct visual identity and new gameplay encounters, including a boss enemy called the Tick Queen. For more experienced players, a new shell archetype named Bishop will arrive, described as a high-performance robot samurai. To help newer players get started, the update will add a social space featuring a firing range.
Looking to 2027
A still-unnamed update planned for March is described by Bungie as meaningfully larger than Symbiosis. It is set to include an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, further onboarding improvements, a new zone, and new alien enemies. The patch will also deepen progression within the shell system and introduce more focused questlines with expanded narrative content.
Bungie says this extensive set of changes will lay the groundwork for Marathon's continued growth throughout 2027. The game has faced considerable scrutiny from critics and players since its release.
