Campina Grande in Brazil to mark Independence Day with large civic parade

The Brazilian city of Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba, will host its annual civic parade on September 7, the national holiday marking Brazil's Independence Day. The event closes out the so-called "Fatherland Week" celebrations.

The parade

The program begins at 7:00 with a flag-raising ceremony at Praça da Bandeira. The parade itself starts at 8:00 on Avenida Floriano Peixoto in the city center. According to G1, this year's theme is "Equity, sustainability and technologies: connections that transform." G1 also reports that 16 schools from the municipal education network, with around 4,000 students, will take part, alongside security and armed forces units, religious groups and civic organizations — roughly 65 participating groups totaling about 10,000 people. Besides the downtown parade, a second parade is scheduled at 14:00 in the Galante district, and on September 13 a further parade will take place in São José da Mata at 14:30.

Traffic restrictions

Road closures begin as early as 6:00, two hours before the parade starts. Avenida Floriano Peixoto will be fully closed, and parking will be banned on Rua Treze de Maio and Rua Coronel João Lourenço Porto. Public transport will run on a Sunday schedule on Monday, September 7: between 6:00 and 14:00, 22 bus lines will get a 30% capacity boost, after which service returns to normal holiday/Sunday operation. Lines 040, 092 and 245 will run until 22:50 to meet demand around the Partage Shopping mall. Access to transit terminals will also change, with entry redirected via Rua Severino Cruz and Rua Sebastião Donato, while the exit route follows the usual path along Floriano Peixoto to Rui Barbosa street and then via Treze de Maio and Coronel João Lourenço Porto.

What's open and closed

According to Jornal da Paraíba, most shopping malls will operate on the holiday — Partage Shopping from 10:00 to 22:00 and Design Mall from 12:00 to 18:00 — while Cirne Center and Edson Diniz malls will remain closed. Banks will be closed for the holiday, and bank transfers, including TED, will not be processed, though PIX payments will work normally. Public offices will run with only essential services, such as urban cleaning and healthcare, while post office branches will be closed and resume operations on Tuesday. City parks will operate on weekend hours, from 5:00 to 18:00.
