Canadiens extend contract with head coach St. Louis

The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to a new multi-year contract extension with their head coach, who has been in charge of the team since 2022. The club confirmed the extension in an official statement.

Coaching success

Under his guidance, the Canadiens reached the playoffs last season for the first time since 2021, advancing all the way to the Eastern Conference Final. There, Montreal fell 1-4 to the Carolina Hurricanes, who went on to become the league's new champions. His performance during the regular season also earned him consideration for the Jack Adams Award, given annually to the NHL's top coach.

From player to bench boss

Before joining the Canadiens, he had no prior experience as a head coach at any level. His only previous coaching-related role was as a consultant for the Columbus Blue Jackets' coaching staff during the 2018-2019 season. In 2018, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in recognition of his playing career.

As a player, the now 51-year-old spent 16 NHL seasons between 1998 and 2015, appearing in 1,134 games and recording 1,033 points (391 goals and 642 assists). Over the course of his career, he played for the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames.

The high point of his playing career came in 2004, when he won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning while also being named the league's Most Valuable Player and leading scorer that season.
