Carnikava Could Become a City – Proposal Submitted to Saeima
Former minister Raimonds Čudars and colleagues have submitted a proposal to the Saeima to grant city status to Carnikava, as its population exceeds 5,000, meeting the legal requirement.

Carnikava, still officially a village, may soon acquire city status. Former Minister of Smart Administration and Regional Development Raimonds Čudars, together with colleagues, has submitted a relevant proposal to the Saeima.
Under Latvian law, if a settlement has more than 5,000 permanent residents, the local municipality must initiate a petition to grant it city status. Carnikava currently has over 5,000 residents, making this step logical.
In recent years, Carnikava has experienced rapid development – active housing construction, improved infrastructure, and transport connections. The village is served by the Riga–Skulte railway line, and its proximity to the sea makes it an attractive place to live near the capital.
If the Saeima supports the proposal, Latvia will gain another city, and Carnikava will officially change its status from a village to a city.
