Owner of dogs that bit children in Carnikava explains the incident
The owner of two dogs that attacked kindergarten children in Carnikava has described how the animals escaped and said he plans to separate them and find them new homes. Their fate will be decided after medical examinations of the injured children are completed.
Ivo Vasiļevskis, owner of two dogs that bit several children from the "Riekstiņš" kindergarten in Carnikava on September 4, spoke to TV3 News about the circumstances of the incident and what will happen to the animals next.
He explained that the dogs got out of his property due to an unfortunate coincidence. Plumbers had been working at his home that day repairing the sewage system and accidentally left open a gate that should not have been opened. Once the workers noticed the dogs had escaped, they immediately alerted police so that surveillance cameras could be used to locate the animals.
Dogs to be separated
Following the incident, the dogs were returned to their owner but are currently isolated from the public, being kept at a hotel in Baltezers. Vasiļevskis said that, on a breeder's advice, the dogs will be separated and not kept together, since there is a risk the situation could repeat itself. He is looking for new owners for the animals and does not plan to keep them himself. He confirmed he is cooperating with police.
Investigation continues
State Police told the LETA news agency that the criminal proceedings are actively underway, in close cooperation with the prosecutor's office, municipal police and the Food and Veterinary Service. Medical examinations will be ordered to determine the severity of injuries sustained by the children. Only after receiving those results will a decision be made on both the further course of the criminal case and the dogs' fate.
In the incident, two unsupervised dogs approached a group of children during a walk, injuring six children, two of whom were hospitalized, as well as one of the accompanying teachers who tried to hold the dogs back. Police have opened a criminal case under provisions of the Criminal Law concerning offenses against public safety and order.
