Major AI Chatbot Apps Now Work With Apple CarPlay

Drivers who rely on AI chatbot apps can now bring them along on the road, provided their car supports Apple CarPlay. A new API introduced with the iOS 26.4 update allows developers to integrate their AI assistants directly into the CarPlay interface.

For safety reasons, these tools only respond to voice commands while driving. To use them, an iPhone must first be updated to iOS 26.4 or later, and the relevant chatbot apps should be updated through the App Store.

Which apps are supported

ChatGPT, as the most widely used chatbot, is available on CarPlay, alongside Perplexity, Meta AI and xAI's Grok. Anthropic's Claude has also recently joined the list of supported apps. Users who have upgraded to iOS 27 additionally gain access to Siri AI, though this feature requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later, since it depends on Apple Intelligence.

Once connected, these apps appear automatically on the CarPlay home screen, letting drivers start new conversations or continue previous ones entirely by voice. Users can also rearrange their CarPlay home screen through iPhone settings to place frequently used AI tools within easier reach.

Limitations to keep in mind

The feature comes with notable drawbacks. Unlike Siri, these chatbots cannot be triggered with a wake word — the app must be opened manually to start a conversation. They also cannot control any car functions or other apps. Voice recognition quality depends heavily on the car's built-in microphones, meaning noisy environments can cause the assistant to misunderstand commands.

These chatbots are not suited for navigation, since they lack access to real-time location data or mapping services — Siri AI is the exception, thanks to its integration with Apple Maps. All of the apps also require an active internet connection, and a weak or absent signal is the most common reason they stop functioning while driving.
