Castleford Tigers head coach Ryan Carr has departed the rugby league club, with the club stating the reason was "personal reasons".

The 38-year-old Australian had already been stood down from his coaching duties two weeks ago. Last week, director of rugby Chris Chester said the club was "following a process" regarding the situation.

Carr was appointed Tigers head coach last August on a three-year contract, having previously worked as an assistant coach at NRL club St George Illawarra Dragons.

"The club would like to thank Ryan for his efforts and wish both him and his family all the best for the future," the club said in a statement.

Under Carr, the team won seven of its 21 Super League matches. He leaves with Castleford sitting ninth in the 14-team table.

Chester, who has led the side in the last two matches, said last week the club was not "actively looking" for a new head coach.

Club owner Martin Jepson said he was sorry about Carr's departure. "We have had a difficult set of circumstances to deal with and unfortunately have not been in a position to provide more information to the fans. However, our actions have been, and always will be, in the best interests of the club," he said.

Jepson confirmed that Jason Netherton would assist Chester and Luke Robinson for the remaining four games of the season.

Castleford travel to face St Helens on Saturday, aiming to build on last week's win over Hull FC.
