Remastered The Witcher 3 arrives September 29, free for existing owners
CD Projekt Red will release a remastered version of The Witcher 3, including both DLC expansions, on September 29 as a free upgrade for current owners. The studio also teased a third expansion, Songs of the Past, coming next year.
During Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, CD Projekt Red closed out the event with news of a remastered edition of its acclaimed fantasy RPG, The Witcher 3. The updated release will bundle in both previously launched DLC expansions.
The studio confirmed the overhauled game will be offered as a free upgrade to anyone who already owns The Witcher 3, starting September 29. Players who originally bought the game on Nintendo Switch will also receive a free upgrade to a version built for Switch 2.
What's changing
Beyond the expected graphical improvements, the remaster brings several deeper changes. The skill tree has been reworked, and the combat system has seen adjustments to the camera, targeting, and new finishing moves. Movement and traversal while playing as Geralt are said to feel smoother, and mount handling has also been tuned.
A new expansion on the way
Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red had already confirmed a third expansion for The Witcher 3, titled Songs of the Past, due next year. Following the remaster announcement at Gamescom, the studio showed a brief gameplay teaser for that upcoming content.
Adding new story content to a game that is now more than a decade old is unusual, and may serve to keep fans engaged while they wait for the next mainline entry in the series, which isn't expected before 2028. Separately, an independent effort to create a modern remake of the original Witcher game also remains in progress.
