Chelsea collapse to defeat at Brentford as Joao Pedro's absence exposes struggles

Chelsea suffered a 3-0 defeat away at Brentford on Friday, a match that exposed two growing problems for the club: a misfiring attack and a defence that keeps leaking goals.

Striker Joao Pedro missed out with a knee injury, disrupting new manager Xabi Alonso's previously productive attack featuring Cole Palmer and record £117m signing Morgan Rogers. Danny Welbeck deputised but struggled to make an impact, managing only 17 touches before being substituted in the 71st minute.

The match was closely contested until the 61st minute, when Jaidon Anthony put Brentford ahead. Chelsea then fell apart, conceding two further goals to complete the collapse.

Defensive troubles persist

Chelsea have now conceded 12 goals this season, more than any other Premier League club, albeit having played one match more than their rivals. Alonso became only the sixth manager to concede at least two goals in each of his first five Premier League matches in charge.

Set-pieces remain a particular weakness — Chelsea have conceded 23 goals from set-pieces since the start of last season, the most in the league, and Anthony's header from a corner brought this season's tally to five.

Stand-in captain Levi Colwill acknowledged that the team's set-piece defending has not been good enough and said improvement is needed.

Continued experimentation

Alonso handed debuts to two players against Brentford: 16-year-old midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, the youngest player to appear for Chelsea in the Premier League, and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson, facing his former club. The starting line-up was Chelsea's oldest since May 2023.

Alonso said his team had lost consistency and competitive edge in the second half. After a promising start to the season under the new manager, Chelsea now head into the international break facing serious questions about their form.
