Celtic add five new signings in a single day, including goalkeeper Johnstone
Scottish club Celtic brought in five new players in one day, including goalkeeper Sam Johnstone along with Van den Berg and Lotomba. The moves follow the retirement of long-time first-choice keeper Kasper Schmeichel due to a shoulder injury.
Celtic completed five new signings in a single day, adding goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, defender Van den Berg and right-back Lotomba, as well as forward Mheuka and left-back Emenalo.
Johnstone, who earned his fourth and most recent England cap in 2023, made 17 appearances last season but lost his starting spot at relegated Wolves in December and has not played since an FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in early March. He began his career at Manchester United and has also played for Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace.
The signing comes after Kasper Schmeichel, who had been Celtic's first-choice goalkeeper since the summer of 2024, played his last match in February before announcing his retirement because of a shoulder injury.
Johnstone said he did not need convincing to join the club, but received a call from former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart, who highlighted the squad's camaraderie and the passion of the supporters. He noted that even after just one day at the club, he could already sense its scale and the pressure to succeed, which he views as a positive.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill described the new goalkeeper as a strong addition to the squad and said Mheuka possesses great quality. Regarding new left-back Emenalo, O'Neill said the player has several useful attributes, is comfortable on the ball, and while capable defensively, also frequently contributes going forward.
