Latvia names safest cities and municipalities for road traffic; Bauska region ranks 24th

The Transport Ministry has announced the results of its competition "Road Traffic Safety in Latvia's Municipalities – Safest Municipality and Safest City 2025," which continues the four-year "Road Traffic Safety Index" previously held. The ranking combined statistical data with residents' opinions and factors such as safe micromobility infrastructure and accessibility.

Among Latvia's state cities, Liepāja was named the safest, having previously ranked third for four years running. Riga and Jūrmala tied for second place, neither having reached the top three before, while Rēzekne took third place after previously placing second. Among the 35 municipalities, Jēkabpils municipality took first place, followed by Līvāni municipality in second and Alūksne municipality in third. Bauska municipality ranked 24th.

Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis said road safety depends on infrastructure, traffic organization, enforcement, education and, above all, a shared attitude toward safety, thanking the State Police and municipalities for their work while noting that efforts must continue.

Accident statistics

In 2025, Latvia recorded 20,085 road accidents, including 3,227 involving injuries. The number of fatalities rose to 118, most occurring in collisions and pedestrian accidents. The number of drivers stopped while intoxicated fell to 653 cases, the lowest in three years. Administrative violations totaled nearly 178,000, with speeding the most common offense. Automated systems detected more than 334,000 speeding violations, while municipal police recorded over 144,000 violations.

To promote road safety awareness among children, the ministry developed an educational resource called "Laid kā lielais!", available online and distributed to schools and municipalities.
