Champions League: Liverpool edge past Atletico Madrid as PSG, Barcelona also win big
Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener, while holders Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona both recorded emphatic victories.
The new Champions League season opened with several one-sided results across Europe. Holders Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Slovan Bratislava 6-1 at the Parc des Princes, with Ferran Torres scoring a hat-trick. Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz also found the net for PSG, while Suleiman Camara scored a consolation goal for the Slovak side.
Despite the rout, Torres said after the match that the team's priority remains improving domestically, as PSG have yet to win a league game this season in France. The Parisian club will next travel to face Manchester City before hosting Barcelona in the competition.
Barcelona also made a strong start, scoring five goals against Feyenoord, while Arsenal secured a 1-0 away win over Napoli.
Liverpool overcome Atletico
Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield, extending their winning run after a Premier League victory over Ipswich the previous week. Atletico took an early lead in the 17th minute when Julian Alvarez set up Marcos Llorente, who chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alisson. It was Llorente's fifth goal in three visits to Anfield.
Liverpool equalised five minutes before halftime through Dominik Szoboszlai, assisted by a backheel from Ronald Araujo. Alexis Mac Allister then put the hosts ahead early in the second half with a powerful strike from outside the box, sealing the win.
After the match, new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said he had thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere at Anfield during his first game in charge in the Champions League.
