Centre Party Supports Karis’ Re-Election, Advocates for Direct Presidential Elections
Estonia's Centre Party has announced its support for the re-election of President Alar Karis and proposed a shift to direct presidential elections.

The Centre Party of Estonia has officially endorsed President Alar Karis for a second term and simultaneously called for a transition to direct elections of the head of state. The decision was made at the party’s council of authorized representatives on Saturday, June 13.
According to the party, the current system of electing the president by the parliament has exhausted itself, as it increases political tension and is difficult for society to understand. The Centre Party believes the president should unite society and be directly elected by citizens.
Party chairman Mihhail Kõlvart stated that President Alar Karis has over the past four years clearly fulfilled the role of both a defender of the Constitution and a person who wants to protect the interests of people across Estonia. He emphasized the party’s support for the idea of direct presidential elections.
"Therefore, at the legislative level, we believe that the president should be elected by the citizens of Estonia, not by the Riigikogu and not by politicians. And until the legislation is changed, we have the opportunity to elect a president who enjoys the support of the people," Kõlvart said.
The Centre Party noted that the incumbent president should continue his work, as in their assessment he has managed to maintain a balance between political forces and society. Presidential elections in Estonia will take place in early autumn.
