Musician Kieran Hebden, better known as Four Tet, has officially released an album under his secret alias, which is an unpronounceable series of glyphs. The project, referred to by the press as "Wingdings," has been a hidden side project for years, but now it has racked up millions of streams on platforms like Spotify and received a formal release.
The album leans heavily toward Four Tet’s dancier output. Despite the project's origins as a potential dumping ground for B-sides, these are not throwaway tracks. They are infectious, highly polished, and showcase Hebden’s sound design skills, from crushed 8-bit drums to hypnotic handpan grooves and sharp synth melodies.
While the songs are groovy and danceable, they are mostly not high-octane rave-ups. Track seven builds to an ecstatic, spiritual climax as layers pile up. Track two, with its deep four-on-the-floor thump and arpeggios, is more suited for the dance floor. Track three blends metallic gamelan-inspired melodies with ultra-deep EDM wubs, while track eight is a beautiful comedown ambient piece.
