A low-pressure system will shape Thursday's weather across Latvia, bringing periods of rain and, in some areas, thunderstorms, while elsewhere clouds will clear to allow sunshine, particularly in the western part of the country.

Daytime air temperatures will not exceed +15 to +18 degrees Celsius, and in areas with rain showers it may drop as low as +11 degrees. This marks a significant cooldown from Wednesday, when observation stations recorded highs of up to +27.4 degrees in Bauska, compared with +19.9 degrees in Kolka. Eight monitoring stations broke the previous September 9 heat record on Wednesday.

Strong winds expected

In the western and central parts of the country, southwesterly and westerly wind gusts of 12 to 17 meters per second are expected. The strongest winds are forecast along Kurzeme's western coast, where gusts could reach up to 21 meters per second.

In Riga, Thursday's weather will be changeable, with periods of rain alternating with clearing skies. The maximum temperature in the capital will reach +17 to +18 degrees. During the day, southerly winds with gusts up to 12 meters per second are expected, shifting to southwesterly in the evening with gusts strengthening to 15 meters per second. Atmospheric pressure at sea level will range between 1004 and 1008 hectopascals.

For comparison, the highest temperature recorded in Europe on September 9 was +39 degrees in Sardinia, while the coldest overnight temperatures ahead of Thursday were recorded in Scandinavia, northern Finland and the Alps, dropping to -2 to -3 degrees.
