90 km/h Speed Limit Takes Effect on Latvian Roads on Thursday
From 15 October, the maximum permitted speed on Latvia's roads is lowered to 90 km/h for the season. The exception is the Riga–Sigulda section of the Vidzeme highway, where 100 km/h is allowed in very good conditions.

From Thursday, 15 October, the maximum permitted speed on roads in Latvia is 90 km/h. The seasonal limit is tied to changing weather and the approach of winter, and it is introduced by replacing road signs. Drivers should expect speed rules to differ from those of the summer period.
Exception on the Riga–Sigulda stretch
On the section of the Vidzeme highway (A2) between Riga and Sigulda, drivers may travel at up to 100 km/h in autumn and winter as well, provided driving conditions are very good. This is possible because traffic there is managed by an adaptive system with variable-message road signs.
If conditions worsen, the system on the Vidzeme highway near Riga can reduce the permitted speed to 90, 80 or 70 km/h. In winter, driving conditions can change during the day, so the speed limit may also vary within a single 24-hour period.
Sign replacement
Signs regulating speed will be replaced across the country during the day on 15 October. On the Ķekava bypass, the replacement is planned for the night between 15 and 16 October. Drivers are urged to be careful and follow the information on the road.
Legal force of electronic signs
Electronic road signs carry the same legal force as ordinary ones, and the speed shown on them must not be exceeded. Violations are punishable by a fine under the law.
If variable-message signs show no information, the maximum permitted speed outside built-up areas is 90 km/h. Drivers must still choose a speed suited to the weather and road situation.
