New rain zone to sweep across Latvia on Thursday, drier weather expected by weekend's end
A new area of precipitation will move into Latvia from the east on Thursday, bringing prolonged and locally heavy rain through Friday and Saturday, with drier, warmer conditions arriving from Sunday.
On Thursday, September 24, Latvia will see brief rain showers in some areas, while a new precipitation zone moves in from the east during the day, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre. In many places the rain will be prolonged, and locally heavy in central and eastern districts.
Winds on Thursday will be light, though along the coast they will shift to the northwest during the day, with gusts reaching up to 15 meters per second. Overnight into Friday, fog is expected to form in many areas, reducing visibility.
Rain to continue into the weekend
On Friday, the new precipitation zone will keep bringing rain to most of the country. In the western part of Latvia, light to moderate northwest or west winds will persist, while elsewhere winds will shift toward the south or southwest.
Overnight temperatures will drop to +8…+13°C, with eastern districts seeing cooler conditions of +6 to +8°C in places. Daytime temperatures will warm to +11…+16°C.
On Saturday, weather will still be governed by cyclonic activity, meaning rain will continue across most of the country. However, starting Sunday, an anticyclone will begin exerting more influence, bringing drier conditions and more frequent sunshine. Daytime air temperatures will gradually rise, reaching as high as +20°C in some areas.
