Fourth Day of Uncertainty at Closed Paternieki Border Crossing

Around 20 trucks have been idling at the closed Paternieki border crossing between Latvia and Belarus for four days, with drivers losing hope. The Interior Ministry is expected to propose a full suspension of operations, while on Monday drivers were allowed to re-register for other border points.

For the fourth consecutive day, around 20 trucks are waiting at the closed Paternieki border crossing on the Latvian–Belarusian border. Drivers still do not know whether the border will be opened, and they admit in conversations with LSM's Latgale regional editorial team that hope is fading.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior is set to propose to the government a complete suspension of this checkpoint. If implemented, Paternieki would no longer be used for border crossings.

On Monday, August 3, truckers finally got the chance to re-register their documents in order to use alternative border control points – via Lithuania or Russia. However, the future of the Paternieki crossing remains unclear, as no official decision has been made about reopening or permanently closing it.
