ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now use your already-open tabs
OpenAI has upgraded the ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so the chatbot can view tabs a user already has open. The sidebar was also updated, and ChatGPT Work can now act inside tabs.

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, has expanded what its ChatGPT extension can do in Google Chrome. ChatGPT can now view the browser tabs a user already has open when Chrome is tagged in ChatGPT's web or desktop app. The update follows the discontinuation of OpenAI's own browser, ChatGPT Atlas.
The extension must be installed. In a demo video published by OpenAI, a user asks ChatGPT to compare three open tabs showing sofas they are considering buying.
Example tasks
OpenAI listed several sample queries:
- fill out a registration form using details from an event brief, stopping before submitting it;
- add the vendors found in open tabs to a comparison sheet, with pricing, key features and source links;
- review all open tabs, compare contractor services and draft an email to the one best suited to a home renovation;
- fill out an open form ahead of a visit to a new dentist and add the appointment to work and personal calendars.
Sidebar and tab control
The ChatGPT sidebar has also been updated. OpenAI says it offers "the full power of ChatGPT" and the user's entire conversation history in Chat or Work, without leaving the page being viewed. ChatGPT Work can also "control" Chrome tabs for tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms or downloading files, and can organize or group open tabs. This is similar to Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature.
