Chelsea close to £16.3m deal for Rayo defender Chavarria

Chelsea are close to finalising a deal with Spanish club Rayo Vallecano for defender Pep Chavarria. The 28-year-old has agreed personal terms, and the total package is expected to be worth approximately £16.3 million, excluding potential bonuses. Chavarria is a key target for new head coach Xabi Alonso, who faced him while managing Real Madrid last season. Nearly a month has passed since Chelsea's initial £15 million bid was rejected at the end of June, with negotiations dragging on. Chelsea believe Rayo raised their asking price during the talks, at one point demanding the full £42.8 million release clause. Chavarria made it clear he wanted to move to Stamford Bridge, despite Rayo's loss to Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in May.

The arrival of Chavarria would complement right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta in July for £47 million. It would allow Alonso to replicate the wing-back system that helped Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2024. The signing would also add depth to the left-back position after Marc Cucurella moved to Real Madrid in June for £51.8 million. Chelsea have also added experienced players such as striker Danny Welbeck, 35, from Brighton, and Jordan Henderson, 36, who cancelled his contract with Brentford. The club has made a record signing by bringing in forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, along with defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million. Midfielder Valentin Barco is expected to join from partner club Strasbourg soon. In the coming weeks, Chelsea are expected to focus on player sales, having already agreed to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Italian club Como 1907 for about £31 million.
