US oil company Chevron announced on Wednesday a new agreement with Venezuela involving investments worth seven billion dollars.

The deal aims to develop two additional oil fields in Venezuela that are not currently being fully exploited. The company estimates that developing these new fields could more than double the country's oil production over a five-year period.

Significance for the industry

Venezuela has spent recent years trying to rebuild its oil sector, which has long suffered from sanctions and infrastructure problems. Chevron is one of the largest foreign players still operating in the country, and this agreement signals the company's intention to expand its presence in the Venezuelan oil market.

Specific timelines for the project's implementation and its impact on overall national output have not yet been detailed.
