American driver Christopher Bell won Sunday night's NASCAR Cup Series race, the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. The victory marked the opening of NASCAR's 2026 championship playoff, known as the Chase.

A breakthrough after a long drought

According to Yahoo Sports (Nashville Tennessean), this was Bell's first win of the 2026 season and the 14th Cup Series victory of his career. One source (Racing America On SI) notes that Bell had gone winless for 33 races and had finished runner-up seven times during the season without securing a win.

The decisive moment came with 12 laps remaining, when Bell passed Kyle Larson for the lead and held on to the finish. According to some reporting, his margin of victory over the runner-up was 1.038 seconds. His teammate Ty Gibbs finished second.

Post-race technical inspection confirmed the result, with Bell's win standing after NASCAR's official review.

Championship implications

The win significantly shook up the NASCAR Cup Series points standings. Bell closed the gap on points leader Denny Hamlin to just 12 points and now sits in second place overall.

Meanwhile, another driver, William Byron, suffered a setback when an engine failure forced him out of the race (DNF), adding pressure to his championship hopes.

The race was described as a strong opening to NASCAR's championship-deciding stretch of the season, in which the sport's top drivers compete for the 2026 title. Bell's win is seen as a significant turning point after his prolonged winless streak.
