How Long Should a Laptop Battery Last on a Single Charge?

Experts outline how many hours different laptop types should run on a single charge and what habits help extend battery lifespan. Proper settings and charging routines can prevent the need for costly early battery replacement.

One of the biggest advantages of a laptop is being able to use it away from an outlet, but that convenience only holds up if the battery lasts as long as it should. Knowing the typical runtime for your laptop's category makes it easier to spot early degradation, since battery replacement is usually costly and often requires specialized tools.

Expected runtimes by laptop type

Most modern laptops last somewhere between four and twelve hours on a single charge, though the range varies widely by category. Premium thin-and-light and Ultrabook models typically reach eight to twelve hours, occasionally up to fifteen under ideal conditions. Standard laptops generally last six to ten hours, while budget models manage roughly four to seven hours. Gaming laptops drain fastest, usually offering only two to four hours away from a charger.

The charger itself also matters — aftermarket chargers may not supply the exact voltage a laptop needs, which can add unnecessary stress to the battery, though it isn't necessarily catastrophic.

Getting the most out of each charge

To approach the upper end of these ranges, it helps to lower screen brightness, close unused background apps and browser tabs, and reduce the display's refresh rate. Switching to a power-saving mode can also help, though it may need to be turned off temporarily for demanding tasks.

Protecting battery health long-term

Activities like gaming, video editing, streaming, and 3D rendering draw significant power, so it's worth planning ahead with a power bank or reliable outlet access when tackling them. Temperature matters too — keeping the laptop between roughly 20 and 25 degrees Celsius is ideal, since heat above 35 degrees Celsius can permanently damage lithium-ion cells, while cold below freezing temporarily reduces efficiency.

Repeatedly draining the battery to empty or leaving the laptop plugged in for long stretches after reaching a full charge can both accelerate wear over time. Some users follow the so-called 40-80 rule — charging from 40% up to 80% — to avoid both extremes, though this practice isn't essential and isn't always practical.
