How long does a PS5 DualSense controller actually last?
The PS5's DualSense controller suffers from relatively short battery life and vulnerability to stick drift, though Sony covers free repairs during a one-year warranty. It also falls well short of the Xbox controller's endurance.
While PlayStation 5 owners often worry about how long their console will hold up, the DualSense controller that comes with it tends to wear out sooner. The most immediate issue is battery life: on a full charge, the internal 1,560mAh lithium-ion battery typically lasts between 6 and 12 hours, depending on the game being played.
That drain comes largely from power-hungry features built into the DualSense — its light bar, speaker, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Games that lean heavily on these, such as Astro Bot and Returnal, can bring battery life down to around six hours. Notably, the pricier DualSense Edge doesn't fare better despite its premium positioning. It uses a smaller 1,050mAh battery, lasting roughly 5 to 10 hours, since extra space is needed for added hardware like rear paddles and removable stick modules.
The stick drift issue
A second factor shaping a DualSense's usable lifespan is stick drift — a defect where the analog sticks register movement even when untouched. The same problem has affected other gamepads, including Nintendo's Switch Joy-Cons, and is generally caused by wear and tear or sweat seeping into the controller's internals. Heavy users are likely to encounter it sooner than casual players.
Regularly cleaning the analog stick area with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol or compressed air can help delay the issue, as can keeping controller firmware updated. If stick drift occurs within the one-year warranty period, Sony will repair or replace the controller free of charge; after that, owners must pay for repairs themselves or turn to third-party services.
On the endurance front, the DualSense also trails the competition. Xbox's Series X/S controller, which runs on AA batteries, typically lasts 30 to 40 hours, while its official rechargeable battery pack offers around 25 to 30 hours — well beyond what Sony's pad can manage.
