How long does a Fire TV Stick actually last?
Amazon guarantees security updates for Fire TV Stick devices for at least four years, but that doesn't mean the hardware stops working afterward. Real-world lifespan depends more on aging apps and hardware capability than on any fixed deadline.
Amazon doesn't publish an expiration date or a recommended replacement age for its Fire TV Stick devices. The one firm figure is the security update guarantee: at least four years from the date of purchase directly from Amazon, or until the model's listed support date, whichever is later. Current models like the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and 4K Plus, for instance, have security updates guaranteed through at least December 31, 2030.
Four years isn't a shutdown date
When the support window ends, only security updates stop — the device itself doesn't stop functioning. A Fire TV Stick can keep working well past that point, though it may become less pleasant to use as apps grow more demanding, interfaces change and video standards advance. Video codecs play a role here too: newer codecs like H.265/HEVC and AV1 compress more efficiently but require compatible decoding hardware, which current Fire TV Stick models support. App support can also fade over time — Netflix, for example, notes its app may no longer be available on TVs and streaming devices made before 2015.
When an upgrade actually makes sense
Slower performance alone isn't a sign the device is done. Amazon recommends restarting it, installing available updates, clearing app caches, checking the network connection and ensuring adequate power before assuming the worst. More persistent issues — repeated app crashes, a service dropping support for the model, or menus that stay slow after troubleshooting — are stronger signs an upgrade could help. Choosing a model with more RAM, such as the 2GB 4K Plus over the 1GB 4K Select, can provide more headroom as software becomes heavier, though Amazon makes no claim this extends the device's usable life. A failing remote, running on AAA batteries, also doesn't mean the streamer itself is dead, since Amazon's Fire TV mobile app can control it instead. Netflix ended support for first-generation Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices in June 2025, more than a decade after they launched in 2014.
