Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed that a shooting occurred Tuesday morning in Biddeford, resulting in one death and involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Biddeford police declined to comment, referring inquiries to ICE, which did not immediately respond. The FBI responded to the scene but provided no further details.

Senator Angus King of Maine said Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the agent opened fire after the man attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against agents who were pursuing him for deportation. According to King, the agents involved were not wearing body cameras. Witness Lucas Scott told local media he heard four gunshots after several ICE agents surrounded a white car.

Advocacy groups Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! identified the victim as a 26-year-old Colombian man who was authorized to work in the U.S. and had a Social Security number. Project Relief, an immigrant rights group, said the deceased was a community member and called for justice. Maine Governor Janet Mills said she had been briefed and that state authorities are working with federal authorities.

The shooting comes days after ICE agents shot a man during a vehicle stop in Texas, later saying he was not the intended target. If an ICE officer delivered the fatal shot, it would mark at least the ninth death linked to federal immigration enforcement since President Donald Trump intensified immigration crackdowns. Internal ICE data shows arrests in Maine have more than quadrupled since early June, reaching about 70 per day by early July.
