Your Claude Shared Chats and Artifacts May Have Been Google-Indexed
Over the weekend, countless Claude chats and Artifacts became publicly searchable on Google, revealing sensitive data including health records and private company documents, after Reddit users discovered a search operator method.
Reddit users found that using search operators like "site:claude.ai/share" surfaced numerous shared conversations on Google. The exposed chats contained health records, clinical trial results, children's names and phone numbers, internal company documents, and even erotica generated by the chatbot.
The issue stems from Claude's "share chat" feature, which creates public links. While the interface warns that "anyone with the link can view," it does not prevent indexing by search engines if links are posted publicly. Anthropic attributed the exposure to users, stating that share links appear in search results only when posted on public forums or social media. They emphasized they do not share chat directories with Google.
By Monday afternoon, Google searches no longer returned results, suggesting remediation. Prior to the fix, Futurism reported finding detailed medical reports, employee reviews with personal information, and erotica in violation of Anthropic's policy.
Google stated they do not control which pages are public and offered tools for site owners to prevent indexing. A similar incident occurred last year when hundreds of Claude chats were indexed. Users can review their shared chats in Settings -> Privacy -> Shared Chats.
