Claude Shared Chats and Artifacts Found on Google Search
Reddit users discovered that Claude shared chats and Artifacts were indexed by Google, exposing sensitive data. Anthropic blamed users, while Google said site owners control indexing.
Over the weekend, Reddit users found that typing search operators like “site:claude.ai/share” into Google surfaced a long list of shared Claude chats and Artifacts — interactive mini apps and documents users can build inside Claude. Some reportedly contained health records, private company documents, and children's names and phone numbers.
The issue appears to have originated from Claude’s “share chat” feature, which creates links that allow anyone with the URL to view a conversation. Claude warns that “anyone with the link can view,” implying it's meant for sharing with friends or small groups, not the public. Google Docs offers a similar feature, but those documents don't become publicly searchable.
Anthropic seemed to blame users, stating that share links only appear in search results when posted on forums or social media. Spokeswoman Amie Rotherham said: “We give people control over sharing their Claude conversations publicly, and we do not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines. These links are not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them.”
The issue was first flagged by a Reddit user on Saturday and reported by 404 Media on Monday. By Monday afternoon, a test search by TechCrunch no longer returned results, suggesting the exposure had been remediated. Before that, Futurism reported finding detailed medical reports, clinical trial results with patient names, children's names and phone numbers, internal company documents, and employee reviews with personal information. Exposed Artifacts included code, work notes, and erotica generated by the chatbot.
Fortune reported at least one chat labeled “shared by Anthropic” containing explicit content, violating Anthropic's policy against generating erotica. It remains unclear how that content was generated, and Anthropic hasn't responded to TechCrunch's request for comment on that case.
Google spokesperson Ned Adriance said: “Neither Google nor any other search engine controls what pages are made public on the web. We give site owners clear controls to decide whether pages can be crawled or indexed.”
This is not the first such incident. Last year, Forbes reported a similar issue where nearly 600 Claude chats were indexed by Google. The scale of the current exposure hasn't been independently confirmed, but multiple users reported finding shared conversations through the same type of search query. Also last year, 404 Media reported that a researcher scraped around 100,000 ChatGPT conversations set to public.
