CleanR Industry to invest €3.3 million in modernizing sorting centre
CleanR Industry has signed a contract with Azortum to automate its packaging sorting centre in Riga. Works are planned to finish by mid-2027 while the facility continues operating.
Latvian environmental services company CleanR Industry has begun a €3.3 million modernization of its packaging sorting centre at Vietalvas iela 5 in Riga. The company has signed a contract with Azortum, an international firm that designs and installs waste sorting and bulk material processing technologies across the Nordic countries, the Baltics, and Central and Eastern Europe.
The centre currently sorts separately collected paper, cardboard, plastic and metal packaging on partially automated lines. The planned upgrade aims to further automate these processes, reducing manual labor, improving the precision of material separation, and increasing the volume of raw materials sent for recycling.
CleanR Industry representative Guntars Levics said the investment's goal is to convert as much waste as possible into valuable raw materials while reducing the amount of material redirected to energy production. Azortum representative Taavi Põri noted that such projects involve not just installing new equipment but delivering a comprehensive solution tailored to the company's specific processes, aimed at achieving more efficient sorting and higher material recovery rates.
Company operations
CleanR Industry sorts more than 30,000 tonnes of various packaging annually, processes 10,000 tonnes of polymer waste into granules, and produces over 25,000 tonnes of solid recovered fuel from waste each year. The modernization is expected to be completed by mid-2027, with the centre continuing normal operations throughout construction.
The investment forms part of CleanR Group's broader push toward circular economy principles. The company also operates the Gurnicas plastic recycling plant in Ķekava municipality and the Ķilupe unsorted municipal waste sorting centre in Ogresgals parish. CleanR Industry is part of AS CleanR Grupa, a 100% Latvian-owned company founded and chaired by Guntars Kokorevičs.
