Cliftonville edge past Glentoran to seize control of title race

Cliftonville claimed a 2-1 home victory over Glentoran in a pivotal Northern Ireland women's Premiership fixture, moving into a commanding position in the race for the title.

Both sides recognised the stakes early on, with Noami McLaughlin and Kirsty McGuinness each testing the goalkeepers with long-range efforts in the opening ten minutes. Glentoran's experienced midfielder Caldwell then made a vital goal-line block to deny Lynch a clear scoring opportunity, while at the other end Gracie Conway's low effort was comfortably saved by Emma Higgins.

Cliftonville broke through in the 23rd minute when Lynch turned in Kirsty McGuinness's pass from close range. Soon after, McGuinness saw a free-kick pushed away by goalkeeper Ellie Scott, who then reacted quickly to deny Abbie Magee's follow-up effort. Glentoran nearly levelled before half-time, but McLaughlin's shot sailed over the crossbar.

The second half began at a slower pace before Glentoran drew level in the 62nd minute, Caldwell turning in the box and firing a powerful finish past Higgins. Glentoran then almost completed the turnaround when Caldwell's header from a Demi Vance corner deflected narrowly wide of the post.

With ten minutes remaining, Cliftonville regained the lead as Caitlin McGuinness dispossessed Faye Loughran and calmly slotted the ball home. The goal boosted the home side's confidence, and in the closing stages Toni-Leigh Finnegan's header was cleared off the line while Louise McDaniel's effort was gathered by Scott.
