CNN: Zelensky Has Little Choice but to Live With Trump's Attitude, as US Pressure on Russia Matters

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has no real alternative to continuing dialogue with US President Donald Trump, CNN concludes. In its assessment, Trump is the only world leader able to exert enough pressure on Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cannot afford a complete breakdown in relations with US President Donald Trump, even though recent decisions in Washington have caused discontent in Kyiv, as Russia's war against Ukraine continues. This is the conclusion of an analysis by the US news outlet CNN. The outlet argues that Trump is the only world leader who could put enough pressure on Russia to help end the war.

A different approach to foreign policy

CNN notes that Trump's foreign policy differs markedly from that of previous US administrations. While they stressed defending democracy and resisting authoritarian regimes, the current president places greater weight on displaying personal influence, ties with authoritarian leaders and economically advantageous deals. The outlet adds that Trump makes no secret of his personal dislike of Zelensky, who, albeit unwittingly, was the catalyst for the first impeachment proceedings against Trump. It is therefore unsurprising, in the outlet's view, that the US president backed Russia's demand to replace Ukraine's leader.

Contested decisions

As an example, CNN cites an agreement on diesel fuel deliveries that, by its assessment, could bring Russia billions of dollars in revenue. The deal came at a time when Trump needed to show voters he could lower fuel prices ahead of the US Congress midterm elections. Trump's demand that Ukraine halt attacks on Russian oil refineries has also been criticised, as such strikes are one way Ukraine tries to weaken Russia's ability to finance the war. The outlet concludes that the approach so far, offering Moscow ever more incentives, has not stopped the war, and Russian President Vladimir Putin continues his attacks.

Zelensky has not hidden his disappointment with some of the US president's decisions, including the fuel deal, and has indicated that possible criticism will not stop him from stating his position. CNN also points to Russian hybrid warfare activity against Ukraine's European allies, which increases the need for closer Western cooperation. Earlier sharp disagreements between Trump and Zelensky were eased, largely thanks to the efforts of European diplomats.

Which peace terms are being discussed

Trump has previously floated imposing tariffs of up to 200% on Ukraine and Russia if they fail to reach a peace deal. The Economist has reported on possible terms of a US-backed plan: a demilitarised zone in Donbas and Ukraine renouncing NATO membership, in return for a path to joining the European Union. Russia, according to the outlet, could be offered eased sanctions and the chance to resume gas supplies to Europe.
