A heavy home defeat

In the fourth round of the English Premier League, Coventry City lost 0-5 at home to Brighton. It was Coventry's fourth straight defeat since returning to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, and the club has still not scored a single goal this season.

According to Sportacentrs, this result makes Coventry only the fifth team in the history of England's top flight to lose all of their opening four league matches of a season without scoring — following Derby (1899-1900), Stoke (1906-07), Preston (1924-25) and Crystal Palace (2017-18).

How the match unfolded

Although Brighton took the initiative from the start, the hosts survived the early pressure and even created several good chances of their own midway through the first half — Jack Rudoni's header flew just over the bar, while goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen denied Frank Onyeka with a fine save.

Coventry's missed opportunities proved costly. Charalampos Kostoulas put Brighton ahead 1-0 late in the first half, and shortly after the restart Maliki Yalcouyé broke through one-on-one with the goalkeeper to double the lead. The hosts' situation worsened further when Tawi Avoniyi was shown a straight red card for an elbow, leaving Coventry down to ten men. Pascal Groß then converted a penalty to make it 3-0.

Even playing with ten men, Coventry had a chance to finally score their first goal of the season, but Brandon Thomas-Asante's shot was saved. Brighton, meanwhile, kept attacking — Lewis Dunk struck from around 30 metres to make it 4-0, and Yasin Ayari added a fifth goal in stoppage time.

League standings

The win ended Brighton's run of three consecutive away matches without a victory. After four rounds, Coventry sit last, in 20th place, without points or goals scored, while Brighton hold fourth place with seven points. Arsenal lead the table with a maximum points haul after four games.
