Data compiled by Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau (CSP) shows that the majority of young people in the country maintain a normal body weight. However, the statistics also reveal areas of concern — a portion of young people show signs of being overweight or even obese.
Key figures
According to CSP data for last year, being overweight was recorded in roughly one out of every seven young people in the country. Obesity, a more severe condition than simple overweight, was less common, affecting approximately one in thirty young people.
Eating habits
The CSP-compiled data also sheds light on young people's eating habits — not all of them include fruits and vegetables in their diet. This factor is linked to the overall picture of body weight among young people, as a balanced diet with sufficient fruit and vegetable intake is considered one of the prerequisites for maintaining a healthy weight.
While most young people still fall within the normal weight range, the data provides insight into trends that could be relevant for future health policy planning and public awareness efforts regarding the importance of healthy nutrition among youth.
