Live camera captures drama: young goshawk gets more than it bargained for at snake eagle nest
Ornithologists in Lithuania witnessed a tense encounter in a snake eagle's nest, when a young goshawk tried to drag out the eaglet but was forced to retreat empty-handed after a fierce struggle.
In late July, Lithuanian ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts became witnesses to an unusual drama broadcast live from a nest camera. A young, inexperienced goshawk entered a short-toed snake eagle's nest, apparently intending to grab the eaglet by the nape and pull it out. The eaglet, however, was no longer a fragile chick but a well-grown and strong bird.
From the outside, there seemed to be little doubt about the balance of power: the goshawk clearly had size and strength on its side. Yet the snake eagle chick refused to give in. It fought back bravely and put up fierce resistance for several minutes. The confrontation ended unexpectedly, as the hawk eventually realized that the prey was too large to handle. Having overestimated its own abilities and hunting skills, the intruder gave up and left the nest with nothing to show for its efforts.
Nature lovers and ornithologists now hope the young goshawk will not return to the same nest during this season. Meanwhile, well-wishers are hoping the courageous eaglet will soon regain its strength and set off on its first flight.
