Nature observer reveals mystery circles in grain field are made by roe deer rut

Nature observer Aivars Liepkalns has shared a video on social media showing trampled circles in a grain field, asking followers to guess what caused them. He said he knew the answer and asked those who were absolutely sure not to comment first, hoping for entertaining guesses.

The suggestions ranged from the mundane to the exotic. One commenter joked that someone had placed a too-hot mug in the field. Another admitted knowing the answer but choosing not to spoil the fun. A third came up with a more unusual theory involving a spectacled snake catching its leg.

Liepkalns then revealed the real reason: nothing supernatural. The circles are the result of roe deer rut. He explained that a roe buck had been chasing a doe. During the rut, deer repeatedly run along the same path, leaving clearly visible circular trails in grass or grain.

In Latvia, the roe deer rut usually takes place in the second half of summer, which is why such traces can be observed in nature at this time of year. So the mysterious circles were made not by aliens or by someone secretly walking through the crop, but by wild animals themselves.
