European Gas Prices Hit Highest Level Since 2022 Amid Middle East Tensions

Natural gas prices on the Dutch TTF exchange rose to 79.11 euros per megawatt-hour on Wednesday, the highest level since late 2022, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Analysts point to fears that LNG supplies from the Persian Gulf could be permanently disrupted.

European natural gas prices surged on Wednesday to their highest level since the end of 2022. At the continent's main gas trading hub, the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), prices climbed 1.22% to reach 79.11 euros per megawatt-hour.

Escalation Over the Strait of Hormuz

The price increase stems from an intensifying conflict between the United States and Iran over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage through which a large share of oil and gas exports from the Persian Gulf region flows. In response to Iranian attacks on US warships, American armed forces recently damaged five Iranian oil tankers and sank one.

Fears of Blocked Supplies

Market analysts say the current rally in gas prices is being driven mainly by concerns that liquefied natural gas shipments from Persian Gulf producing nations could be disrupted for an extended period, or even permanently. The situation is further complicated by the absence of clear signs that unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be restored anytime soon.

Should tensions in the region continue, higher gas prices could have a broader impact on energy costs across Europe, which remains significantly dependent on liquefied natural gas imports from various parts of the world.
