On the evening of September 11, Daile Theatre is holding the premiere of a new comedy production, staged by director Mārtiņš Eihe together with the theatre's acting ensemble. The production is based on the well-known play by English playwright Michael Frayn.
Two parallel realities
The concept of the production rests on the contrast between what happens on stage and what unfolds backstage. While the performance itself plays out in front of the audience, an entirely different, chaotic and emotionally charged life is underway behind the scenes. There, set pieces collapse, love triangles develop among the actors, and quiet schemes of revenge are hatched.
The blurring of boundaries
At the climax of the play, the separation between the staged performance and the real backstage life begins to dissolve. Backstage events gradually break into the on-stage action, creating a situation where the two realities merge before the audience's eyes. This interplay with theatre's own self-awareness and inner workings is what makes the production a classic example of comedy in which the theatre itself becomes the central character.
