Daile Theatre premieres comedy "Noises Off" about life backstage
On the evening of September 11, Riga's Daile Theatre premieres director Mārtiņš Eihe's staging of Michael Frayn's comedy "Noises Off," in which the theatre itself and its backstage life become the main character.
Riga's Daile Theatre is premiering a new production this evening, September 11 – the classic comedy "Noises Off" (Latvian title "Mazliet par skaļu"), based on the legendary play by English playwright Michael Frayn. The staging was directed by Mārtiņš Eihe together with the theatre's acting company.
Two worlds in parallel
The production centers on the theatre itself – its stage and its backstage. While an on-stage performance unfolds in front of the audience, an entirely different, hidden life plays out backstage. Sets collapse, romantic intrigues brew, and quiet acts of revenge simmer among the performers.
The turning point of the plot comes when the boundary between these two parallel worlds – what happens on stage and what happens behind it – begins to dissolve. Backstage life gradually breaks through into full view, creating comic misunderstandings and situations where the theatre's inner workings become as visible as the performance itself.
About the play and production
Michael Frayn's "Noises Off" belongs to the classic theatre-comedy genre and is internationally regarded as one of the best-known works devoted to theatre as an art form and to the everyday reality behind the scenes. In the Daile Theatre's staging, the text is brought to life by director Mārtiņš Eihe.
The premiere takes place on the evening of September 11 at the Daile Theatre.
