Dalglish and Carney honoured with PFA Merit Awards

Former England attacking midfielder Karen Carney has been given a PFA Merit Award in recognition of her contribution to the women's game.

Carney was part of the Arsenal squad that completed a historic quadruple in the 2006-07 season, winning the league, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Uefa Women's Cup, the competition that later became the Women's Champions League.

She then spent two seasons in the United States with Chicago Red Stars before returning in 2011 to Birmingham City, the club where she began her career. The following season she scored an extra-time equaliser to help Birmingham win the FA Cup.

Carney moved to Chelsea at the end of 2015, where she won the WSL and FA Cup double in the 2017-18 season and later captained the club before retiring from playing in 2019.

At international level, Carney made her senior England debut at just 17 years old in 2005. She went on to make 144 appearances for the Lionesses, scoring 32 goals, and helped the team reach third place at the 2015 Women's World Cup. That tournament was one of eight major competitions she played in for England, and she also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

Since hanging up her boots, the 39-year-old has forged a career as a broadcaster and analyst. She was also appointed by the UK Government to lead an independent review into the future of domestic women's football, which was published in 2023.
