Denmark's Ministry of Digital Affairs announced on Monday that the country's civil registry had suffered a cyberattack, resulting in unauthorized access to a large volume of sensitive personal data.

According to the ministry, the breach exposed personal information belonging to approximately 8.8 million people. The compromised data includes names, home addresses and national registration numbers — information used across a wide range of public and private services in Denmark, from healthcare to banking.

Denmark's total population is just over 6 million, meaning the number of affected records exceeds the current population, suggesting the registry also contains information on other individuals once connected to the country, such as former residents or other registered persons.

The ministry has informed the public about the incident but has not yet released detailed information on who was behind the attack, how it was carried out, or what measures are being taken to limit further risk to those affected.

The incident adds to a growing list of cyberattacks that have hit government data systems across several European countries in recent years, renewing concerns over the cybersecurity of national registries and the protection of personal data in the digital age.
