Danish PM: Greenlanders do not want to become Americans

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to Trump's posted map showing Greenland covered by a US flag, stressing that Greenlanders will decide their own future. The reaction came as Greenland, Denmark and the EU signed a satellite network investment deal.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has commented on an image US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on September 7, showing a map with the US flag covering, among other territories, Greenland.

Frederiksen said that both Greenland's government and its people have repeatedly and clearly stated they do not wish to become part of the United States. She said this should leave no room for doubt, either in the US or anywhere else in the world. According to the prime minister, it is the people of Greenland who must decide their own future, adding that Greenland is not for sale.

Context

Trump did not provide any comment or explanation for why he posted the map. Even before the Danish prime minister's statement, Iceland's foreign ministry had summoned the US ambassador over the same map.

Notably, on the morning of the same day, September 7, Greenland, Denmark and the European Union signed an agreement to invest in a more powerful satellite network. Separately, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an additional €200 million in investment for Greenland over the next two years.

Greenland's status and potential US interest in the island have repeatedly caused diplomatic tension between Washington and European countries in recent times.
