Seniors compete in unconventional Olympic-style games in Daudzeva
The "Sudrabegles" association organized senior Olympic-style games in Daudzeva, bringing together pensioner teams from several regions in a friendly atmosphere. The host team "Pindacīšas" performed best.
Seniors from various parts of Latvia gathered in Daudzeva to take part in unconventional Olympic-style sports games, where the focus was less on results and more on spending time together and making new acquaintances.
The "Senior Olympic Sports Games" event was organized by the association for disabled people and seniors "Sudrabegles", funded through a grant from Aizkraukle Municipality Council for NGO activities. Several local community representatives from the Jaunjelgava and Daudzeva area also contributed to putting on the event.
Association leader Valija Lucāne said the idea was inspired by the 2026 Winter Olympics, prompting her to organize playful competitions open to people of all ages. Guests attended from Jaunjelgava, Koknese, and the Alūksne pensioners' association "Sudrabs", who also toured a local ornamental garden.
Playful challenges
Participants faced a range of unusual tasks — throwing a plush sheep into a ring, carrying an egg on a spoon, assembling and disassembling a meat grinder, kicking a ball at a mock football station, and running a relay pushing a teammate in a wheelbarrow. The most popular challenge was staying on a mechanical rodeo bull, which nearly everyone wanted to try, including participants in their eighties.
In the team standings, the host team from Daudzeva, "Pindacīšas", took first place. The Alūksne team "Sudrabs 1" came second, and "Jaunjelgavas draiskules" placed third. After the team competitions, individual visitors could also try the challenges in different age categories.
Valija Lucāne noted that such events are important because they let seniors meet and build friendships that continue long after the event, expressing hope that this would be just one of many similar gatherings to come.
