Daugavietis Steps Down from the Board of the Vienotība Party
Saeima member Dāvis Mārtiņš Daugavietis has resigned from the board of the party Vienotība, taking responsibility for the poor Saeima election result of the Jaunā Vienotība alliance. He urged others to take responsibility too.
Dāvis Mārtiņš Daugavietis, a member of Latvia's parliament (the Saeima) and chair of its Sports Subcommittee, has left the board of the party Vienotība (Unity). He announced the decision on social media on 12 October. It follows the recent Saeima election, in which Jaunā Vienotība (New Unity), the alliance that includes Vienotība, won only seven seats.
Responsibility for the election result
Daugavietis believes that over the past four years and during the election campaign, Jaunā Vienotība made many fundamental mistakes. He sees his own responsibility in having been unable to prevent them. He said that last Sunday he had called on colleagues to resign collectively, but the call went unheard.
He urged others to take responsibility for the negative result as well. Daugavietis expressed hope for future discussions on the future of Vienotība and Jaunā Vienotība in various formats, and wished for a joint search for the best solution. He also apologised to those he had let down with his inaction.
In his post, the lawmaker praised Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri (JV), who did not wait for others.
The earlier step
Last week Abu Meri announced he would step down as chair of the Vienotība council, taking a share of responsibility for the election outcome. He was the most heavily struck-off candidate on the Jaunā Vienotība list, with 3,369 minuses.
Election results
In the 15th Saeima election, the "Apvienotais saraksts" (United List) won decisively with 41 seats. It was followed by "Latvija pirmajā vietā" (Latvia First) with 17, "Suverēnā vara/Apvienība jaunlatvieši" with 15, the National Alliance and the Progressives with 10 each, and Jaunā Vienotība with seven seats.
