A man born in 1957 was violently robbed in his own flat in Daugavpils, Latvia's second-largest city, on 27 October, according to the State Police. The attacker entered the home, sprayed gas, caused the victim bodily injuries and, threatening him with a knife, took a ring and a wristwatch. Police detained a suspect on the day of the incident, and a criminal case for robbery has been opened.
Detained the same day
Officers of the Southern Latgale precinct of the State Police Latgale regional department carried out the investigation. They identified the possible attacker and detained a man born in 1978 that same day.
During a court-sanctioned search of the suspect's residence, police found the stolen ring and wristwatch. Pre-trial detention, the strictest preventive measure in criminal proceedings, has been applied to him.
Previous contact with law enforcement
Police say the suspect had previously come to the attention of law enforcement and has been tried for similar offences. The criminal proceedings for robbery are continuing, and the investigation is ongoing.
The State Police reminded the public that no one is considered guilty until their guilt has been proven in accordance with the procedure established by law.
